A good quality of life can, in part, result from good physical and mental health. To achieve this goal, exercising mind and body is necessary. This requires discipline, but it reaps lots of benefits.
I recently purchased a rebounder for exercise. It is a small trampoline that even old folks like me can use to keep fit. I was surprised that I could get very good “work out” acting like a kid again. Also, I have been walking, which is a good exercise for anyone. It is a complete exercise activity which burns calories, stimulates blood circulation, and helps lower cholesterol levels. The best part is that walking is free and you can share your experience with your friends.
In order to improve my mental ability, I recently started trying to learn Spanish. I probably would not have chosen this language except Spanish has become more prevalent in my area. Most of our signs are in English and Spanish so that tells me that Spanish is here to stay. I have a few Hispanic clients that I can practice saying “hello” or “how are you” but other than that, I just want to read Spanish. I have found that many adults from Mexico and South America speak their native language but their children speak English quite well. When I meet with our Hispanic clients, generally a child will come with them to translate. I don’t think I can stick my head in the sand and refuse to learn their language while at the same time expecting them to learn my language. We are part of a global economy whether we like it or not.
I think Rosetta Stoneis the best method for learning another language. It uses multi-media technology to connect the meaning of words and phrases to images and objects in every day life. It seems to simulate how a young child would learn to speak and understand a language. Anyone can purchase the desk top version or an on-line version. I prefer the latter although it is a little pricey. It may be helpful to check with your local library for the availability of a free Rosetta Stone account. Currently, I am using a free account provided by the library in Greenville. Other instructional courses include web sites on-line that teach languages. I like Learn Spanish Central that has many tools such as videos and audio lessons.
In additions, there are colleges and universes that provide free courses to seniors. This is an opportunity to learn a language in a classroom environment for the right price. I have a friend who is taking Spanish for free at a local college and uses that knowledge to help communicate with the students she is teaching to speak English. She actually has a small business in her home to complement her income.
I know there are many different fun and helpful ways to stay fit. I try to make it enjoyable and simple to insure a long-term commitment. I realize that I just need to use it or lose it. (Did I ever have it?) How about you?
